An investigation has been launched following the death of a 68-year-old diver. About 10.40a.m. yesterday, Monday 23 January 2012,  police were informed that a 68-year-old man had lost consciousness on a private boat which was making its way back to the Lobster Pot dock. It appears that the man had been diving with some friends and, a short time after getti

g back onboard the boat, he collapsed and lost consciousness. On arrival at the dock he was conveyed to the Cayman Islands Hospital, George Town, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The man is a Cayman Islands resident from West Bay. Enquiries into the death are ongoing.

A police investigation has been launched after the West Bay home of a serving RCIPS Officer was damaged by gunfire this weekend. Shortly before 4.30am on Sunday, 22 January 2012, police received a report of what appeared to be gunfire in Velma Banks Drive, West Bay. Subsequent investigations revealed that the home of a serving police officer had been damaged by gunfire. No-one was injured in the incident and security precautions have been put in place with respect to the safety of the officer and his family.   Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.   Anyone who was in the area at the relevant time on Sunday morning and saw anyone in or around the area, or heard any gunfire, is asked to contact West Bay CID  on 949-3999, the RCIPS Tip-line 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers on 800-8477 (TIPS).

Police on the hunt for Community Heroes

Officers from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service are on the hunt for community heroes; people who have gone that extra mile to keep the Cayman Islands safe. If you know of anyone answering this description, please contact the police NOW! Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 RCIPS Community Award. The award will be presented at the RCIPS Outstanding Awards event at the Ritz-Carlton on Friday, 16 March 2012. The Award is open to people or organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to community safety. It is the second year that the award will have been presented. Nomination forms are available at all district police stations or via the RCIPS website www.rcips.ky <http://www.rcips.ky> . Nominations close on Friday 10 February 2012. Last year (2011) the winners were the staff of the Caribbean Club for their part in the apprehension of two men on their premises with a firearm. “The inaugural Outstanding Service Awards in 2011 was a huge success,” said Commissioner David Baines. “The event was completely underwritten by business, corporate and individual sponsorship. It was a sell-out as people came out in their hundreds to support the men and women of the RCIPS, and those in our community who go that extra mile to help keep Cayman safe. “I’m delighted to be able to say that the Police Welfare Fund benefitted to the tune of $50,000 as a result of the evening and the generosity of our sponsors. “It was a great pleasure for me to be able to celebrate the many positive aspects of policing and community involvement in the Cayman Islands. I hope that this year, once again, we will receive many nominations naming those very special people within our community who deserve to be recognised for their outstanding contribution.” There will be a number of other awards presented on the night;

Police Officer of the Year

Support Staff Member of the Year

Diversity Award

Police Welfare Award

Special Constable of the Year

Cayman Brac plane crash – update Further to our previous release concerning an aircraft crash on Cayman Brac  on Sunday 13 November 2011, please note; The RCIPS is now in a position to name the two men found dead at the scene as; Jose Santos Castaneda Castrejon age 35 years (Mexican) and Fernando Duran Garcia age 56 years (Columbian ). Post Mortem examinations carried out on both men confirmed cause of death to be blunt force trauma. Both bodies have been repatriated to their home countries following consultation with their respective Embassies. Some members of the media have been keen to ascertain how much the repatriation of the bodies cost the Cayman Islands. We can confirm that this was done at no cost to the Cayman Islands Government. The RCIPS is also in a position to confirm that personal items including some cash were found within the aircraft. As we have previously stated no illegal drugs, guns or other contraband was recovered. Some containers containing a liquid was found onboard the aircraft. The contents of those containers is being analysed. The crash is still under investigation and other law enforcement agencies are assisting in the investigation. We are not yet in receipt of the UK investigators report.
