District meets start track season

Kiara McLaughlin left wins easily the George Town Meet

The first in a series of district track and field competitions started this year with the George Town meet last Saturday.

Most athletes were able to put their best forward in the start of the competitions that will see them represent the Cayman Islands in various international meets throughout the year.

According to Kenr

ck Williams, Cayman’s track and field coach, the season will begin with the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, 9-11 March. The CARIFTA Games will be held 7-9 April in Hamilton, Bermuda.  

The Cayman Islands will also participate in the Caribbean Union of Teachers meet that will be held in Nassau, Bahamas 27-28 June. There will also be the IAAF Under 23 competition, and of course the Olympic Games in London

So far, Cydonie Mothersill and Ronald Forbes have already qualified. “We are looking forward to qualification for Kemar Hyman too,” said Mr Williams.

Cricket coach Theo Cuffy said he was also looking for hi son Tyrell Cuffy to qualify for the Olympics this year.

In results from last Saturday’s meet, Brandon Johnson ran the 300m in the boys 17 age group in a time of 36.95.

Elizabeth Ibeh, spokesperson for the Cayman Islands Amateur Athletic Association said: “This was an outstanding performance and we expect he will improve later on in the season.”

Ms Ibeh also welcomed back Chantell Morrison (2010 Carifta U-17 100m champion) who had been absent from competition during 2011, due to injury.

In the girls 9-10 60m dash, Monique Gordon of Trinity Track Club placed first with a time of 9.63; second was Hannah Robinson, at 9.84; third was Ashantae Graham, of Hy-Tech Tigers in 10.01.

In the girls 11-12 60m dash, Anniekay Anderson of Mustang Track Club 8.67 easily took the race.  Kayc Faud-Edwards of Hy-Tech Tigers finished second in 8.86 and Valeska Bennett of Trinity Track Club placed third in 9.12.   Serena Hibbert of Mustang Track Club was fourth in 9.23.

In the girls 11-12 high jump, Anniekay Anderson continued to show her dominance by leaping 1.21m.  Aijah Lewis of Trinity Track Club jumped a length of 1.21m to place second. Serena Hibbert of Mustang Track Club took third position after a 1.14m leap.

Taj Yen of Mustang Mustang Track Club took the boys 9-10 60m dash in 9.94. He was quickly followed by Dimonte Seymour of Mustang Track Club, who finished at 9.97. Leyma McLean of Trinity Track Club finished in 10.06.

Rashaun Conlloy, 13 of Mustang Track Club won the boys 13-14 60m dash in 8.01.  Amari Perryof Trinity Track Club was second in 8.20. Leighton Thomasof Hy-Tech Tigers finished third at 8.36 and Veko Ramgeet, of Trinity Track Club placed fourth in 8.41.
